WESTPORT, CT — A downed power line caused a power outage in downtown Westport on Friday, according to fire officials.

The downed power line is in the Post Road and Myrtle Avenue area, and is affecting approximately 600 residents.

Eversource has been notified and is responding, according to officials.

"Please avoid the area and stay away from any downed wires," officials wrote on Facebook. "Always assume wires are live and extremely dangerous."

The fire department also offered the following tips, as high heat and humidity are expected Friday evening:

• Stay hydrated
• Avoid strenuous outdoor activity
• Check on elderly neighbors or those without air conditioning
• Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles
