Staples Girls Golf Opens Season with a Win

Sophomore Rachel Pontoriero fires a 43 to lead Wreckers over Fairfield Ludlowe.

It was a beautiful day for golf as the Staples Girls’ Varsity brought home a win from the Fairfield Ludlowe Falcons after the short ride to Smith Richardson Golf Course on Tuesday, April 4.

“I’m proud of us and how we did, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season. We can only go up from here!“ observed senior Captain Reilly McGeehan after the 208-233 score was tallied.

Sophomore Rachel Pontoriero, who played Varsity as a freshman, was the match medalist with a six-over-par 43.

“Today was a great start to the season, and we all pulled together for a win,” said Pontoriero.

McGeehan and fellow senior Captains Keeva Boyle and Ellery Vishno are three-year varsity starters. Freshman year (2020) was virtual for the them, and all three earned the “Freshman Sensation Award” for dedication and skill four years ago.

Making their debuts in Varsity golf were junior Maia Gubitz and freshman Katelynn Mitchell.

Both Varsity and JV teams add up to a record-setting 28 talented and enthusiastic student-athletes who see a long layoff before the next match on April 19 because of Spring break.

“We know many of the players will play golf on vacation, even those traveling overseas. It’s a great sign if the spirit and love of the game for this team,” observed Coaches Patty Kondub and Maureen Fontana.
