Staples High School Football Coach Recognized By New York Giants

The Wreckers have started the 2025 campaign with a 4-0 record.

WESTPORT, CT — Staples High School football coach Matty Jacowleff has been named the New York Giants and Gatorade Lou Rettino High School Coach of the Week for Week 6 of the 2025 season, the team announced.

In his first year as head coach, Jacowleff has led the Wreckers to a 4-0 start, including a 31-6 road victory over Darien — Staples’ first win against the Blue Wave in 13 years.

The Lou Rettino High School Football Coach of the Week Award recognizes area coaches for their dedication to youth football, student-athlete development, and community involvement. The program honors the memory of former Union High School (N.J.) coach Lou Rettino, who was known for his commitment to the sport and to his players’ personal growth.

As part of the recognition, The Giants Foundation and Gatorade will donate $2,000 to the Staples football program. Jacowleff will also receive a certificate signed by Giants head coach Brian Daboll and be honored at a postseason dinner and at a 2026 preseason home game.

Jacowleff, a 2014 Staples graduate, became the school’s 15th head football coach in April. Before taking the role, he served as the team’s offensive coordinator and coached wide receivers and defensive backs. He was named FCIAC Assistant Coach of the Year in 2022 and has been part of four state championship teams.

"I am sincerely honored by this tremendous recognition from the New York Giants," Jacowleff said in a statement. "I am incredibly blessed to be any small piece of the Staples High School Football program and have the opportunity to serve our students every single day. Within our program we preach the importance of fire and passion, this award is a tribute to the fire and passion of so many. For the Giants to honor us in this way means the world to our community."

A Westport native, Jacowleff earned a business degree from Northeastern University and a master’s in education from Fairfield University. He teaches at Staples High School and lives in Westport with his English bulldog, Blitz.
