News release from Westport Public Schools:
WESTPORT, CT — A few days before graduation, countless Staples High School seniors took a nostalgic journey back to their elementary school for the district’s second annual “senior walk” on June 9. This tradition had soon-to-be graduates walk through the halls of Long Lots, Coleytown, Saugatuck, Kings Highway and Greens Farms elementary schools to reconnect with the past before stepping into the future.
Sporting their graduation caps and gowns, seniors were greeted by enthusiastic cheers and high-fives from former teachers and current elementary students. The walk served as a reminder of how far they have come.

"I would tell my younger self to meet as many new people as you can," remarked senior Isabella Baltierra as she reflected about her walk at Saugatuck Elementary School. "And don’t forget to thank the people who help you along the way. I would also tell her to savor every moment because it all flies by so fast."

The tradition is a poignant reminder of the community's role in each student's journey. For the graduates, it is an opportunity to reflect on the friendships, lessons, and experiences that have shaped their education. For the teachers and staff, it is a moment of pride, seeing their former students prepare to embark on the next chapter of their lives.
"There were so many highlights to this special day," said Safiya Key, Coleytown Elementary School principal. "Like the visit to the library’s book nook that somehow 'shrunk,' and the genuine enjoyment of gathering with former teachers to chat about college and their futures."

The walk also strengthens the bond between different generations of students, fostering a sense of continuity and support within the school community. As the seniors walked these familiar halls one last time, they carried with them memories and aspirations that will guide them as they move forward.
"It’s an honor for us to have hosted Staples seniors for one more visit at GFS," said principal Brian Byrne. "Our entire community is proud of all of them and delighted to see them return."
