Suspect Accused Of Trying To Cash Checks Stolen In Westport: Police
The suspect, a Stratford resident, is accused of stealing the checks from a residential mailbox.
WESTPORT, CT — A 26-year-old Startford man was arrested this month on identity theft and related charges in connection with a stolen check case from the fall out of Westport, according to authorities.
In addition to third-degree identity theft, Treyvon Chapman was also charged with criminal attempt to commit third-degree larceny, and illegal possession of a personal ID information device.
The case stems from Nov. 5, 2024, when Westport police were notified that an unknown person was seen stealing checks from a residential mailbox. The suspect was seen fleeing in a black vehicle.

"The complainant contacted her bank to advise them of the theft and to stop payment on the checks," said Westport Police Lt. Eric Woods in a statement.
Two days later, the complainant was notified by a bank branch in Milford "that a person had attempted to negotiate the check in that branch, but they declined to process the transaction."

Police used surveillance footage and other information to identify Chapman as the suspect, and earlier this month, he was arrested at his home and charged.
Chapman was released after posting bond on bail of $35,000, and he is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on April 1.
