Below is the text of a release issued Monday from the Westport Fire Department about the storm:

The Westport Fire Department responded to numerous calls late this afternoon after a quick moving thunderstorm passed through the area. The storm caused minor flooding and brought down trees and wires throughout the town. This included one home hit by lighting causing a small fire. Firefighters quickly removed a section of wall to extinguish the fire. If you think your home has been hit by lighting, smell smoke or see fire, call 911 immediately.

A few roads remain impassable at this time. Please use caution while driving and do NOT drive over or under low hanging lines or pass barrier tape. Treat all down lines as live AND dangerous.

  • Downed wires are common after storms. If you are outside after a storm, be alert for lines that may be hard to see in streams or puddles.
  • Avoid touching anything, such as a car, object or equipment, or anyone who is in contact with downed wires.
  • Keep children and pets away from downed wires.
  • Call 9-1-1 immediately to report downed wires.
