Westport Fire Department Issues 'Urgent Fire Safety Advisory'
From October 1 to November 15, 226 fires were reported statewide, with 9 out of 10 wildfires caused by human activity.
News release from the Westport Fire Department:
WESTPORT, CT — The Westport Fire Department has issued an urgent fire safety advisory due to extreme fire danger across the area. According to CT Department of Energy & Environmental Protection Department of Division of Forestry, from October 1 to November 15, 226 fires were reported statewide, with 9 out of 10 wildfires caused by human activity. The leading causes include:
- Campfires
- Debris burning
- Powerline incidents
- Smoking
Outdoor Burning Prohibited

To reduce wildfire risks during these hazardous conditions, all outdoor burning is prohibited until further notice. This includes:
- Fire pits
- Open flames (e.g., brush or leaf pile burning)
- Chimineas and other outdoor flame devices
Violators risk significant fire spread and may face legal consequences.

Indoor Burning Precautions
For those using indoor fireplaces or wood stoves, follow these safety tips:
- Ensure chimneys and flues are professionally cleaned and inspected.
- Burn only dry, seasoned wood to minimize creosote buildup.
- Avoid overloading your fireplace or stove.
- Use a protective screen to contain embers.
"This Doesn’t Apply to Me" – A Dangerous Attitude
Despite fire warnings and bans, illegal outdoor burning remains a persistent issue.
“Every time someone ignores the outdoor burning ban, they’re putting lives, homes, and natural resources at risk,” said Fire Marshal Terry Dunn. “These reckless actions stretch our firefighting resources and increase the chance of a devastating wildfire in our community. We all need to do our part to prevent avoidable disasters.” Brush fires in Connecticut have become a daily occurrence, driven by dry conditions, abundant natural fuels, and preventable acts of negligence.

Smoke from the Great Barrington fire in Massachusetts may cause noticeable odors and haze across Connecticut. Although Air Quality Index is currently reported as “good” in our area, we will be monitoring the conditions.
State Issues a Stage 2 Drought Advisory – Residents & Businesses Encouraged to Take Mitigation Measures: All eight counties in Connecticut are currently experiencing conditions consistent with a Stage 2 or “Incipient” drought due to far below normal precipitation levels and ongoing fire danger levels statewide.
Recommended Drought Mitigation Measures
Water Conservation Tips:
- Limit outdoor watering and use of irrigation systems.
- Fix leaks in faucets, pipes, and appliances promptly.
- Run dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads.
- Use rain barrels to collect water for outdoor plants.
Use extreme caution with gas-powered equipment during dry conditions as the increased fire risk due to dry grass and debris can easily ignite from the equipment's hot engine parts.
