Westport Opens Warming Centers During Cold Stretch
Freezing temperatures are forecast through the weekend.
Information from the Westport Office of Emergency Management:
WESTPORT, CT — The Governor has activated Connecticut's Severe Cold Weather protocol in response to the freezing temperatures. The protocol goes into effect this evening, January 17, until noon on Monday, January 22. The cold weather protocol aims to ensure that people who may be exposed to the cold weather have access to shelter for this time. Warming centers and shelters will be open across the state.
If you or someone you know needs shelter, please call 2-1-1 to be directed to a nearby shelter and transportation, if needed. Click here for more information.

The following Westport locations are open to the public as warming centers during the cold snap:
Westport Center for Senior Activities: 21 Imperial Ave
Mon- Fri 8:30am-4:30pm

Thurs 9am-9pm, Fri 9 am - 6 pm, Sat. 9 am-5 pm & Sun 1 pm-5 pm
Westport Museum for History and Culture: 25 Avery Place
Tues-Sun 11 am - 5 pm
Westport/Weston Family Y: 14 Alan Raymond Lane
Mon-Friday 5:30am-9:00 pm
Sat-Sun 7:00-7:00 pm
Westport residents facing hardships due to the cold weather should contact Human Services for assistance at 203-341-1050 during regular office hours Mon-Fri 8:30 am - 4:30 pm.
Please check your heat source for functionality, turn up your heat before the cold weather starts, and if you heat with oil, check your tanks.
Temperature-related health problems, such as frostbite and hypothermia, can happen quickly in extreme temperatures, and it is important to understand the symptoms. Keeping warm indoors is critical; if you are struggling with heating costs or need advice on energy assistance programs, several resources are available here.
Governor Lamont said, “Being outdoors in these conditions is not only harmful, it can be fatal. Shelters and warming centers are available across Connecticut. Anyone in need of a safe place to stay warm is urged to call 2-1-1 to get connected to a nearby location. These cold conditions can also be dangerous for dogs, cats, and other pets, and it is strongly advised to bring your pets indoors.”
