Westport Preps Enforcement Of Seasonal Ban On Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers
Both handheld and backpack gas-powered leaf blowers are subject to the ban.
WESTPORT, CT — Westport officials are reminding residents and landscaping crews that gas-powered leaf blowers will be prohibited beginning May 15, marking the start of the second year of enforcement under a local ordinance passed in 2023.
Under the regulation approved by the Representative Town Meeting, the seasonal ban applies annually from May 15 through October 15. It includes both handheld and backpack gas-powered leaf blowers.
“As of Thursday, May 15, 2025, gas-powered leaf blowers may not be used during Summer,” Conservation Director Colin Kelly said in a statement. The ordinance defines “Summer” as the period between May 15 and October 15 each year.

Kelly said the town issued notices to 168 properties during the first year of enforcement, following complaints from residents. The department provided educational materials outlining the ordinance, environmental impacts of gas-powered equipment, and alternative landscaping tools.
“We are hoping to see a significant change this year, with more property owners adopting compliant equipment and updating their landscaping habits,” Kelly said.

The Conservation Department will continue to investigate reports of violations. Residents can submit complaints by email or letter. “We need help from the public in gathering information,” Kelly said. “We will follow up on each complaint and send educational materials to those not adhering to the ordinance.”
