Westport Resident Selected In Major League Baseball Draft

The Staples High School grad is a standout pitching prospect.

WESTPORT, CT — Hiro Wyatt, a pitching prospect from Westport, was selected in the third round, number 75 overall, by the Kansas City Royals in the 2023 Major League Baseball draft.

Wyatt, a right-handed pitcher and 2023 Staples High School graduate, was ranked as the 234th prospect on the Top 250 Draft Prospects list, according to MLB.

According to Staples Baseball and Prep Baseball Report New England, Wyatt was 2023 Connecticut Player of the Year, and is headed to the University of Southern California in the fall.

News 12 Connecticut reports that Wyatt has a 97-mph fastball, and his main pitch is a slider.

Wyatt was at home on Monday, watching the draft, when he heard his name called, reported Hearst Media.

The Westporter is one of four Staples grads to be drafted by MLB teams in the past 10 years, and is one of a half-dozen Connecticut-based players selected in the 2023 draft, as of Tuesday.
