Westport Swimmer Wins Silver Medal At Junior World Championships

Annam Olasewere was the only junior athlete to represent Connecticut at the recent World Aquatics Junior Championships in Netanya, Israel.

WESTPORT, CT — Showcasing her exceptional talent and composure on the world stage, Annam Olasewere – the only junior athlete to represent Connecticut at the World Aquatics Junior Championships in Netanya, Israel – is officially one of the two best 50-meter freestyle junior female swimmers in the world, with a time of 24.95 seconds.

Almost 100 family, friends, Staples High School Swim and Dive teammates, and the Westport community gathered at the Westport Library to cheer on Annam’s victory in real time, thanks to the Library’s special screening for the occasion.

Annam was selected to represent Team USA at the World Aquatics Junior Championships in Natanya, Israel; the six day began September 4, and concludes today. Over 600 young swimmers from over 100 countries competed throughout the week.

Olasewere has made significant waves in the competitive swimming world, having achieved two Olympic trial cuts in the 50- and 100- meter freestyle events. She is scheduled to attend the June 2023 U.S. Olympic Trials in Indianapolis. Her 2023-2024 inclusion on USA’s Junior National Team further exemplifies Annam’s talent, skill, and leadership abilities. Annam trains and swims year-round at Chelsea Piers Aquatics Club, Stamford, CT and is coached by Aaron Montgomery.

Annam’s two younger sisters Ayaan and Anwara Olasewere are also competitive swimmers, and standouts in their respective events.

Said Ngassam Ngnoumen, Annam’s mother, who mingled with and thanked those at the Westport Library, “Community matters and great leadership matters. Thanks to the Westport community for the incredible support you have shown for Annam and my family. We are truly grateful.”
