Sound Of Gunfire Is Actually Dozens Of Loud Mufflers: Wethersfied Police
Numerous overnight 911 calls about gunfire appear to have been prompted by dozens of vehicles driving with off-market mufflers, police said.
WETHERSFIELD, CT — What sounded like gunfire overnight in Wethersfield turned out to be noise made by dozens of vehicles with loud mufflers, according to police.
Authorities received numerous 911 calls shortly after 12:30 a.m. Sunday about the apparent sound of automatic gunfire from Wolcott Hill Road east into Old Wethersfield, police said.
Law enforcement found about 75-100 vehicles in the parking lot of Putnam Park, according to police, who said the vehicles immediately dispersed onto Interstate 91 North when officers arrived.

“The majority of the vehicles appeared to be equipped with aftermarket mufflers that sounded similar to gun fire when the engines accelerate and decelerate,” police said in a news release.
“A check of the area failed to locate any physical evidence of gun fire. At this time, it appears this same group of vehicles had been driving through Wethersfield and the sounds from their exhausts generated the 911 calls.”
