I'm a bit of a jaded old shopper. After the age of 50, I realized I already own just about everything I need. But when I meet Eileen Duffy at the Wilton Farmer's market a few Wednesdays ago, I really fell for her handmade placemats and fabric coasters.
Some were made with oilcloth. Others weren't, but all the fabrics were attractive and machine washable. I loved her trellis patterns, which are so popular now, and she had a yellow set that match my decor perfectly.
I noticed the perfect hand-stitched edges and asked Eileen if she had stitched them herself. "Yes," she said with a raised eyebrow as if to ask, "Who else would have stitched the edges?"
Then I calculated how long the project might have taken me -- and I'm good with a needle and thread -- and I was sold.
