Enjoy Campfire Fun While Summer's Still Here

1. If you’re at a campfire this summer, chances are there will be sticky, gooey s’mores. According to CandyUSA today, Aug. 10, is S’mores Day. Here are a few facts about the origin of s’mores to celebrate the treat’s special day.

The s’more dates back to at least the 1920s, when the Campfire Girls came up with the idea. The legend has it that the Girl Scouts soon caught on and the treat quickly became a campfire staple. The name s’more may come from a shortening of the phrase “some more,” as the treat was called in Girl Scout literature until the early 1970s.

2. Keeping with this campfire theme, there are a couple events coming up that may call for some marshmallows. Going Batty Family Night takes place Friday at 7 p.m. at Northwest Park in Windsor. The park invites you and your family to come learn about bats and see some up close. Visitors will venture outside to enjoy a few stories, a “nature moment” and the traditional roasting of marshmallows, all while gathered around a glowing campfire. Bring a blanket and be sure to visit Windsor’s town Web site for more details and to register. 3. An exciting overnight family camping event takes place on Friday, Sept. 23 at Mystic Aquarium. Have you or your kids ever wondered what the aquarium's animals do at night? Bring your sleeping bag, pillow and a flashlight and find out. This family overnight trip includes games, crafts, tours and snacks as well as a great opportunity to view the beluga whales and other aquarium creatures at night. Visitors can pick a place to sleep next to the circling sharks, clownfish or even octopuses. A continental breakfast is provided in the morning.
