Windsor Mental Health Crisis Leads To Gunfire, Peaceful Negotiation: PD

Police cordoned off the area, and nearby schools delayed dismissal during the multi-hour incident, according to police.

WINDSOR, CT — A man suffering a mental health crisis led to gunfire and road closures Wednesday afternoon, but police said the situation was resolved without any injuries.

Police were summoned around 12:50 p.m. to a home on Matthew Lane for a report of a 35-year-old man experiencing a mental health issue.

A family member called police and reported the man was “acting paranoid, yelling obscenities, and had believed the government was spying on him,” police said.

The man had a valid pistol permit with several handguns registered to him. While officers spoke to family in front of the house, they heard a gunshot inside, according to police.

Both the man and his brother were still inside at the time of the gunshot. Police were able to determine that no one was injured, police said.

Police established a perimeter for safety, and an officer began communicating with the two brothers inside the house. Around 4:45 p.m., crisis negotiators were able to convince both brothers to surrender peacefully to officers, police said.

The man who was suffering the mental health crisis was transported to an area hospital for an evaluation. He faces several charges, but police on Thursday did not yet say what charges will be lodged against him.

During the four-hour incident, police cordoned off the vicinity for safety, and a portion of Park Avenue was closed. Nearby schools had a delayed dismissal as a precautionary measure, police said.
