Windsor Weekend Guide: Chamber Music, Broadway Theater, Dr. King Celebrations

A look at events in Windsor from Thurs., Jan. 12 through Thurs., Jan. 19.

Students Present Mozart, Handel, Beethoven

Students in Loomis Chaffee's chamber music program will present an evening pieces by Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Paganini, Brahms and Lou Harrison, a contemporary composer on Thurs., Jan. 12.

Students will perform on violin, cello, clarinet, guitar, piano and vibraphone in presentation of their works, which have been labored over throughout the school's chamber music course. Throughout the course, students work in duos, trios and quartets to enhance their musical abilities and understanding.

This event is free and open to the public. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at 's Hubbard Performance Hall.

Broadway Cabaret at L.P. Wilson

Singers from Windsor's Cirillo Summer Theatre will take center stage at this weekend when they present Broadway Cabaret — a night of Broadway Classics presented as a fundraiser to make this summer's shows (Pippin and The Ever After-A Musical) possible.

The show's twelve singers are high school students and young adults. Together, along with special guest Jade King, a Sage Park middle school student, the group will deliver songs from Hair, Rent, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Les Miserables and A Chorus Line.

This one-night-only, fund-raising event will be held at at 7:30 p.m. on Sat., Jan. 14. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Tickets cost $12 for general admission; $10 for students under 18 and seniors 65 and over.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Events

A number of events held in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day will be held over the next week, beginning with the 's presentation of Martin Luther King in Connecticut, a film produced by Simsbury High School students about Dr. King's time spent in Simsbury as a teenager working at a tobacco farm.

While a student at Morehouse College (Atlanta, GA) at the age of fifteen, King made the trip up to the Nutmeg State with fellow college students to fill jobs left by men who had gone to fight in World War II.

Those in attendance will be able to hear form Simsbury High students and their teacher about what went into producing the film.

Those who worked tobacco during the 1940's and 1950's are encouraged to come and bring memories and artifacts to share.

The film will be shown on Mon., Jan. 16 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets for this event cost $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, and $4 for members. Refreshments will be served. For more information, contact the Society at 860-688-3813 or online at www.windsorhistoricalsociety.org

will kick off a week-long celebration in honor of Dr. King on Tues., Jan. 17. The week will conclude on Fri., Jan. 20 with a concert at the school's Hubbard Performance Hall by a group of Windsor High School students.

Teens of Praise, Windsor High's Gospel Choir, is set to perform at Loomis from 7:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
