Windsor Weekend Guide: Lowenkron, Grammer Lead Weekend of Live Music

A night of skiing under the stars at Northwest Park will also be offered.

Susan Lowenkron to Play Freight House; Thurs., Jan. 12 at 6:30 p.m.

Accomplished flutist Susan Lowenkron will return to the Thurs., Jan. 5 for a show, during which she will be joined by Tony Morris on fiddle, Irish pipes, bodhran and mandocello.

Lowenkron is able to manipulate a number of instruments as well, as she will delight those in attendance with pieces on the flute, recorder, krumhorn, whistle and harp.

Lowenkron is a teacher, author and founder of Tapestry, which plays medieval, renaissance and British Isles music.

The show will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Art Center on Jan., 5. The Art Center will accept a $10 suggested donation at the door.

Student Art at the Windsor Historical Society; Thurs., Jan. 5

The  will open its latest installment of the Bridging Centuries, Bridging Cultures series on Thurs., Jan. 5, 2012 when it features works created by Windsor High School students.

With the help of local sculptor Lon Pelton, photographer Len Hellerman, Windsor High curator Christina Vida, art teacher Marjorie Renno, Windsor seniors, and armed with digital cameras, Windsor High students captured Windsor's past and made connections to its present through the creation of art.

Students used historic architecture, art, history and modern structures as their inspiration.

The exhibit will open with a public reception on Jan. 5 from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. The reception is free and all are welcome to join in the opening, which will include refreshments.

Ski Under the Stars at Northwest Park; Fri., Jan. 6 at 7 p.m.

Weather permitting (a base of six inches of snow is required) winter outdoor enthusiasts will have the park all to themselves Friday from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. when Northwest Park opens its trails to cross country skiers and snowshoers. Headlamps and flashlights are permitted, but are not required.

This event costs $10 for Windsor residents, $15 for non-residents. Participants must register online or by calling the park's Nature Center at 860-285-1886 to reserve equipment. Activity #2252.115. Space is limited.

Tracy Grammer to Play Northwest Park; Sat., Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Folk enthusiasts will be in for a treat Saturday when Tracy Grammer blows through town, violin and guitar in hand. Grammer has toured since the late 1990's, earning fans and opening for the likes of folk-legend Joan Baez, among others. Grammer comes to Windsor before continuing her tour out west.

Tickets for this show cost $18 and can be purchased through the Northwest Park website via PayPal.

Cham Hendon Art Show to Open at Mercy Gallery; Tues., Jan. 10 at 6:45 p.m.

Loomis' gallery will host a reception for the opening of painter Cham Hendon's exhibition Tuesday evening. Hendon, whose paintings are created using an acrylic emulsion called Rhoplex, has had works shown throughout the United States, Europe and Mexico. He also has works exhibited in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of the City of New York.

A free reception for the opening of the exhibition will be open to the public and held on Tues., Jan. 10 at 6:45 p.m.

Loomis' Mercy gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:30– 9 p.m. and Sunday afternoon from 1– 4 p.m.  There is no admission charge.

Acrylic Painting Demo at L.P. Wilson; L.P. Wilson at 6:45 p.m.

An acrylic painting demonstration will be held at L.P. Wilson on the night of Tues., Jan. 10, conducted by Jane Barrientos.

This event is free and is sponsosred by the Windsor Palette and Brush Club.
