Windsor's Push For A Majority And A Voice

What you should know today, Tues., Aug. 2, 2011.

1. Deputy Mayor Alan Simon addressed the public Monday night during the town council meeting, expressing the importance of having a majority, which Windsor does not have, in a legislative district. According to Simon, hearings were recently held to discuss and hear redistricting options. Both he and Mayor Don Trinks spoke at the hearings to express Windsor's interest in maintaining a majority in one of its legislative districts. Simon also reported that all three of Windsor's state representatives (David Baram, Peggy Sayers and Elaine O'Brien) were present at the hearing, but not in support of Windsor's cause. Simon expressed regret over what he said he views as their wish to stay in office rather than supporting the potential influence of Windsor residents.

2. With the census having been completed in 2010, Windsor has a one-in-ten year opportunity to be considered for redistricting of legislative districts.

3. Windsor is currently carved into three legislative districts (15, 60 and 61) shared with Bloomfield, Windsor Locks, an Granby and Suffield. Similarly, Windsor is divided into two senatorial districts (2 and 7) that are shared with Hartford, Bloomfield, Suffield, Somers, Granby, Enfield, and East Granby. Windsor is in the minority in each of its voting districts, essentially holding Windsor residents to the mercy of voters in towns with which its districts are shared.
