Man Charged With DUI Stopped His Car On I-84 In Middlebury: Police

A man is facing charges that he drove under the influence and stopped his car on I-84, according to state police.

MIDDLEBURY, CT — A Newtown man is facing DUI charges, according to state police. A trooper on duty at 12:23 a.m. Wednesday spotted a Subaru Impreza stopped in the right travel lane near the Benson Road overpass in Middlebury.

There are signs in the area reading "Emergency Stopping Only." The trooper parked behind the Subaru, activated the lights on his cruiser, and approached the parked car.

The trooper found the man in the driver's seat was sleeping and knocked on the window to wake him up. The trooper saw that the man was "exhibiting signs of possible intoxication" and administered field tests, which the driver failed.

The Newtown man was taken into custody and charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs/alcohol, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, and other motor vehicle violations.

He was released on $500 bond. He is scheduled for arraignment Oct. 18 in Waterbury Superior Court.
