Woodbury Pastor Fired After Accusations Of Meth Dealing

A Woodbury man is accused of dealing meth and other crimes, according to state police.

WOOBURY, CT — A Woodbury man was charged with dealing meth and other crimes, according to state police.

Herbert Miller, 63, was appointed as the new pastor at Woodbury United Methodist Church in July, according to WFSB 3-TV and FOX 61. Miller was selling meth out of the rectory, FOX 61 reported.

Miller was terminated from his job following the charges. Lisa Isom, director of communications for the New York Annual Conference (NYAC), a regional unit of the United Methodist Church, said the following on the termination:

"Within 24 hours of the news of the charges leveled, NYAC Resident Bishop Thomas J. Bickerton met with church leadership and later Herb Miller to address the allegations and ensure the safety of the local church and community. Under the advice and direction of the bishop, Mr. Miller surrendered his credentials.

"Mr. Miller is no longer an Elder in the United Methodist Church."

State police said Miller was driving on Feb. 9 with a suspended license and without insurance.

Police found Miller had crystal methamphetamine in both rock form and liquefied into a hypodermic needle for injection.

He was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, use of drug paraphernalia, and motor vehicle charges.

He was released on a $10,000 non-surety bond. He was scheduled to appear in Waterbury Superior Court on Feb. 23.

Woodbury United Methodist Church issued the following statement regarding the arrest:

"The news of this unfortunate circumstance was met with reflection, shock and deep sadness. The disease of addiction is a problem that affects so many people, families, and communities.

"To protect the privacy of all concerned and allow a fair and just judicial process to run its course, we cannot out of respect for those who may be harmed and in the interest of doing what’s right, speak to the specifics and circumstances surrounding these allegations.

"Our prayers are that Herb Miller, those who love and care for him, and all others impacted by substance abuse and addiction receive the care needed to begin recovery and a meaningful healing process."

Miller did not return a call seeking comment.
