A Grim Milestone: COVID-19 Infections Climb To More Than 500,000, Hitting Every Corner Of Florida

For the first time, Florida has reached the 500,000 mark in COVID-19 infections, a trajectory that took only five months and a few days since the coronavirus was made public.

On March 1, 2020, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced two coronavirus cases, one in Hillsborough and the other in Manatee, at a time when residents knew little about the virus and the disease, and how it would impact hundreds of thousands of people.

As of Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2020, The Florida Department of Health surpassed the 500,000 figure, with data showing more than 5,400 additional infections reported and a total of 502,739 COVID-19 cases. The total from the day before was 497,330.

Only one other state has reached the 500,000 mark — California — according to a New York Times analysis.
