Gov. Ron DeSantis has issued an order to that effect in which he praises “the selfless service and sacrifice of the 248,000 Floridians who fought in World War II.” The state continues to provide services to more than 31,000 WWII vets, he added.
“It is imperative that Florida’s youth, our greatest resource, understand and recognize the service and sacrifices made by members of the Greatest Generation in hopes that they will be inspired,” the document continues.

It’s the latest in a series of such memorials lately for figures including the late Republican U.S. Sen. Bob Dole, U.S. Rep. Carrie Meek, and the three service members killed during the 2019 terrorist gun attack on Naval Air Station Pensacola.
President Joe Biden, who marked the occasion by visiting the World War II Memorial in Washington, issued his own proclamation.
“As we mark National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, we honor the patriots who perished, commemorate the valor of all those who defended our nation, and recommit ourselves to carrying forth the ensuing peace and reconciliation that brought a better future for our world,” it reads.
“We will never forget those who perished, and we will always honor our sacred obligation to care for our service members, veterans, and their families, caregivers, and survivors.”
