Murphy, the first Vietnamese-American woman elected to Congress, announced her decision via a video posted Monday on social media.
“Public service is not without personal sacrifice and, as a mom with two young children, my time away from them has been hard for them, for me, and for our family,” Murphy said.

“So I wanted to share with you that I will not be seeking another term as your representative in Congress.”
Although a redistricting plan proposed by a Florida House committee would carve up her district to her distinct disadvantage, Murphy insisted in her video that she entertained no “fear of losing reelection.”
“I still strongly believe in a citizen Congress, where ordinary citizens run for office in search of duty and service, not in search of a career,” she said. “And I never intended my time in Congress to become a career.”
