1 Dead, 5 Injured In Big Bend Road Crash

A Riverview man was killed in a Sunday afternoon crash that also left five people injured.

RIVERVIEW, FL — The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a Sunday afternoon crash that left a 79-year-old Riverview man dead and five people injured.

According to the sheriff’s office, Robert D. Smith, 41, was driving a Chevrolet HHR eastbound on Big Bend Road just before 3 p.m. April 30. Smith, an email from the sheriff’s office said, tried to turn left onto northbound Lincoln Road when his vehicle crossed the path of Keith L. Thompson’s Infiniti G20.

Thompson’s Infiniti, which was westbound on Big Bend Road, struck the passenger side of the HHR, the email said. The Chevrolet overturned, deputies noted.

Smith and four children were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after the crash. The names of the children are not being released. Deputies say three are 13-year-old girls. The four injured child is a 9-year-old girl.

Thompson was also taken to a local hospital, but died later from his injuries, the sheriff's office said.

Deputies have not yet announced charges. Further information is not being released at this time.
