Buccaneers' Wheelchair Football Team Tryouts To Happen Soon

The Hillsborough County Buccaneers will compete in competitions throughout the season around the country, including Chicago, Utah and Tampa.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL — The Hillsborough County Buccaneers Wheelchair Football Team is hosting open tryouts for its 2022 team that will be one of nine national teams competing in the USA Wheelchair Football League (USAWFL) this upcoming season, a news release said.

Tryouts will be Saturday, April 23, and Saturday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lesley "Les" Miller, Jr. All People's Community Park and Life Center.

  • Must be at least 18 years or older as of Aug. 1, 2022
  • Must have a permanent physical disability that consistently reduces the function of the lower limbs
  • Must have an elite performance sport wheelchair
  • Must be able to compete in all USA Wheelchair Football League competitions
  • Must participate in at least one practice a week between June 1 and Nov. 1

The Hillsborough County Buccaneers will compete in several competitions throughout the season around the country, including in Chicago, Utah, and Tampa. The league is the first of its kind for adults with physical disabilities who are looking to play America’s favorite sport. The Hillsborough County Buccaneers Wheelchair Football Team is managed by Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation.

USAWFL is a program of "Move United," a nonprofit organization devoted to the promotion of parasports among youths and adults with physical disabilities. League expansion was made possible through the NFL Salute to Service Award and the Bob Woodruff Foundation.
