Driver Charged With DUI After Striking Hillsborough Deputy With Car

A deputy working a construction zone on I-75 in Ruskin was struck by a car. The driver was charged with DUI.

RUSKIN, FL — A Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy was struck by a driver who has been charged with driving under the influence.

Just after midnight on Nov. 6, a deputy driving a marked Hillsborough County sheriff's Chevrolet Silverado was conducting an off-duty detail, providing roadway safety and traffic control services for a construction site in the left lane of northbound Interstate 75, south of College Avenue.

According to the sheriff's office, a 2011 Honda Accord sedan driven by Courtney Lynnette Settle, 24, failed to yield the right of way to the deputy and struck him from behind.

The deputy suffered injuries that didn't require him to be taken to the hospital.

The sheriff's office said Settle showed signs of impairment and was arrested for DUI at the scene. She's been charged with DUI with personal damage and personal injury.

"Driving under the influence is completely unacceptable, and there is no excuse for putting the lives of others at risk with such reckless behavior," said Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister. "The consequences of impaired driving can be devastating and life-changing. We will not tolerate such disregard for the safety and well-being of our community."
