Bayshore High School Celebrates Avid National Demonstration School Status
On Wednesday, March 8, 2017, Bayshore High School will celebrate being one of only six high schools in Florida with the title.
From Manatee Schools: Bayshore High School will hold a special celebration on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at 2:15 p.m., to celebrate becoming an AVID National Demonstration School. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.
This exciting distinction will make Bayshore one of only six high schools in Florida with this AVID designation. In addition, it means other schools interested in learning more about AVID will now visit Bayshore High to see and experience their programs in practice.
“This is a great honor for the Bayshore High School community and for our school district,” said Bayshore Principal David Underhill. “It takes at least two years of hard work and dedication by students, staff and the school district to even be considered for this designation, so we are thrilled that the hard work has paid off with this honor.”

What is the principle of AVID? It holds students accountable to the highest standards, and provides academic and social support. AVID students are typically middle-B, C, and D students with the desire to go to college and willingness to work hard. Many of them will be the first in their families to attend college. A site coordinator organizes the curriculum, as well as activities for the AVID elective classes.
National Demonstration Schools undergo a rigorous validation process, which must be revalidated every two years. The Bruins have worked hard for years leading up to this honor. Staff and AVID students will be present for the final certification site visit on Wednesday, March 8th at 7:15 a.m.
