Florida Sees 206,447 Cases; Some Businesses Shutting Down Again

The mayor of Florida's most populous county ordered a partial rollback of business reopenings after the state set a new coronavirus record.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida health officials reported 6,336 new cases of the coronavirus Monday as the mayor of the state's most populous county ordered a partial rollback of business reopenings following a holiday weekend in which the state set an all-time record, with 11,458 cases on the Fourth of July.

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez said he plans to close all restaurants in his county, which includes the cities of Miami and Miami Beach, starting Wednesday with the exception takeout and delivery services. He also plans to shut down ballrooms, banquet facilities, party venues, gyms, fitness centers and short-term rentals.

Gimenez announced late Monday night that he would allow outdoor dining to continue with additional restrictions that include tables of no more than four people, appropriate distancing and music played at a level "that does not require shouting."

Florida had a 9.2 percent positive test rate for the virus Monday as the number of tests administered in the state reached 2,235,937. The percentage of positive cases has been increasing for about three weeks, though the cases are trending younger.

Gov. Ron DeSantis acknowledged that the younger age of people testing positive makes it more difficult to contain the spread of the virus, though he said the symptoms for that age group tend to be less severe.

"The No. 1 age for cases in Florida is 21," the governor told reporters Monday during a stop at The Villages retirement community. "If you're 21, and you don't have significant comorbidities, your fatality rate is pretty much zero."

The state's total positive cases rose to 206,447 from 200,111 over the previous 24-hour period as South Florida beaches prepared for another reopening after being closed over the long Fourth of July weekend to slow the spread of the deadly disease.

Meanwhile, Patch readers overwhelmingly reported in an informal survey they believe it is too soon to send children back to school.

Florida's largest public health system, Miami-based Jackson Health, began limiting inpatient surgeries and procedures to emergency and urgent cases starting Monday to make more room for seriously ill patients, including coronavirus patients. Many of the new positive cases in the state are of people between the ages of 33 to 37.
