Florida Surpasses 5,000 Coronavirus Deaths; 10,347 New Cases

The death toll in Florida from the coronavirus surpassed the 5,000 mark on Monday as health officials reported 10,347 new cases.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — The death toll in Florida from the coronavirus surpassed the 5,000 mark Monday as health officials reported the disease had taken 5,072 Florida residents and another 111 non-Florida residents who died in the state.

Florida health officials reported 360,394 cases of the coronavirus cases in Florida, an increase of 10,347 from 350,047 cases a day earlier.

"Twenty-five percent of the hospital beds are available statewide and almost 20 percent of the ICU beds," Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis told reporters. "The COVID patients represent a larger percentage of the census than they did a month, or a month-and-a-half ago, but we do have the capacity."

The governor said he asked state health officials to look into reports that some people who made an appointment to be tested for the virus may have received a positive test result even though they were never tested.

"I've heard it enough to be concerned about it," DeSantis said. "I also want to know which labs is that happening at. I don't think it's happening at every one, but if there's one or two that it is, it's a big, big problem."

Miami Beach announced Monday it was canceling the rest of its summer camp program after a child tested positive for the virus. Officials said the decision was based on the overall rising number of cases and not on the child who tested positive.

Twenty-four Florida counties reported 119 new deaths Monday though Florida health officials only reported a total of 90 new deaths. Orange County reported one fewer death than previously reported.

Monday's death total compares with 87 new deaths Sunday, 91 new deaths Saturday (health officials reported 90), 128 new deaths on Friday, 157 new deaths on Thursday, 113 new deaths Wednesday, 132 new deaths on Tuesday and 35 new deaths last Monday.

The governor said he was asking health officials to look into cases where someone has tested positive for the disease and subsequently died for other apparent reasons.

"There was a case here in central Florida where somebody, I think they were in their 20s, and they were in a motorcycle accident. That was counted as a coronavirus death," the governor said. "Obviously, most of these cases you have respiratory distress, you are dying because of, so I'm not diminishing that."
