BRADENTON, FL — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented and changing times.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know about these outstanding people and their stories.

This submission comes from Susan Brady, who nominated her friend, Betsy Plante, founder of The Blessing Bags Project, a Bradenton-area nonprofit.

How do you know the local hero?

Friend

What does the local hero do?

She started a ministry/nonprofit that helps (the) homeless and less fortunate in the Bradenton area, but with Hurricane Ian has teamed up with local businesses/nonprofits and sent items to Pine Island/Myakka, etc.

Why do you believe the local hero should be recognized or honored?

She works tirelessly providing help to others. Not only has she helped with hurricane supplies but (she also) works with business in the Cortez area. Swordfish Grille…should also be recognized for their team of volunteers doing fundraisers that allow folks from this area to contribute/volunteer and be part of her mission. 88 Keys Piano Bar has donated a van to help her with many of her daily tasks. Her and her team are out of the streets, usually Fridays and Sundays, providing coffee/water and sandwiches to those in need. She started The Blessing Bags Project with a homemade bag filled with toiletries that her and her team gave to veterans, families or folks living on the streets. From hurricane relief one week to working on Christmas parties for (the) less fortunate the next and always partnering with Hungers End providing meals for the homeless, she is my Bradenton angel.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the local hero?

If you need help, no matter why, she's the person to contact.

Thank you for all you do, Betsy Plante with The Blessing Bags Project!
