UPDATED: 88 Years Young: Open House for Helen Mulrennan Young
The "baby" of the Mulrennan clan turns 88 on Feb. 27. At a party in Valrico, a large crowd gathered on the eve of her birthday to wish her well. The Mulrennan groves today house a road and a middle school in the Greater Brandon community of Valrico.
First the road, then the middle school, were named in honor of the Mulrennan family that on Feb. 26, with friends and community minded citizens, celebrated the 88th birthday of Helen Mulrennan Young.
“I’m jut so grateful to God I have so many friends,” Young said as the party neared its end. “And I appreciate everybody that came out to see me and wish me a happy birthday."
Both Mulrennan Road and Mulrennan Middle School run through land that used to house the Mulrennan groves.

The open house celebration took place at the home of Young’s son and daugthter-in-law, Jim and Jo Powell, in Valrico.
Young’s birthday is Feb. 27.

Young is a 1942 graduate of Brandon High School and still meets every other month for lunch at the with her “” classmates and alumni from other grades.
She and the Powells are long-time members of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Brandon, which this year celebrates its 51st year of service.
