Hillsborough County Fire Rescue is looking to spark a career interest in at-risk middle and high school students to become our nation’s next firefighters, emergency medical technicians and paramedics.
The Fire Rescue Summer Youth Academy offers an intense two-week summer camp for youths interested in learning more about those careers and wanting to gain actual hands-on experience.
The free camp will be held June 17-28 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fire Rescue Training Facility, 3210 S. 78th St., Tampa.

As a cadet during this camp, students will gain hands-on, supervised experience in fire engine operation, using a fire hose, using a fire extinguisher with live flame, climbing a truck ladder, and the dangers of methamphetamine labs. They’ll also be trained in disaster preparedness, fire behavior, CPR and first aid. Instructors are current Hillsborough County Fire Rescue professionals.
The academy is part of a crime prevention program that is partially funded by a U.S. Department of Justice grant. Therefore, the grant requires that all applicants also must be low-income, and have at least one of the following barriers:
