Brandon’s BSAC To Use Grant To Fund Learn-To-Swim Scholarships

The Brandon Sports & Aquatic Center is one of three Florida centers, and some 210 nationwide, designated as a "Make a Splash Partner" of the USA Swimming Foundation.

Chuck Burgess has been a lifelong swimmer and in his adult life is committed to ensuring that every child learns how to swim — and swim safely.

As executive director of the not-for-profit Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center , Burgess’ job has become a tad easier.

BSAC has received up to $5,000 in grant funding from the USA Swimming Foundation, through a donation from Bealls Department Stores, to help achieve the foundation’s goal to help provide the opportunity for every child to learn to swim.

BSAC reports that so far in 2011, it has taught some 100 kids how to swim. With the grant money, BSAC officials said they plan to offset lesson costs for 50 children who otherwise would not be able to afford the instruction.

BSAC is one of three “learn-to-swim” providers in Florida to receive the grant, according to a news release issued by BSAC, in announcing its designation as a “Make a Splash Local Partner.”

This puts BSAC in the company of more than 210 providers nationwide, according to the release.

"While we have been teaching children to swim since 1963, the program has been a local partner since 2007," Burgess said. "Since then, BSAC has literally thousands of children that have gone through the program and are now more water safe."

Therese Hickie is the center’s aquatics director. Her mission mirrors that of the center’s executive director.

“I am thrilled when a child is swimming independently in the water and they realize that it isn't that hard and they have conquered a fear,” she said in the center’s release.

Chris LaBianco, chief development officer for the USA Swimming Foundation, noted that local partners help “expand our reach across the country, and potentially save lives.”

“With pools in most backyards and in community developments, ponds and the beach nearby, it is so important that every child know how to swim,” Burgess noted.

He added that he is especially excited to use the grant money to reach out to children who might “not otherwise have the opportunity to get swimming lessons.”
