Minutes after his team's 17-14 football victory over the Gainesville Hurricanes, head coach Sean Callahan talks about the Dec. 2 contest that gave his Armwood High Hawks another region title. Next up: state semifinals Dec. 9.

Off the field, Sean Callahan acted like it was any other day at the office, even seen wheeling an empty ball cart as his players changed from game to street clothes to catch a ride home.

This night, though, like any other in a coach’s life, held a series of lessons learned from the players in whose hands you place your trust of their actions.

And then you watch, to see how much they learn — and excel.

No different for Callahan, head football coach of the Armwood High School Hawks (13-0), who before packed bleachers Dec. 2 at Lyle Flagg Field led his team to a Class 6A region title victory over Gainesville (10-3).

Next up is the state semifinals, Dec. 9, at home against St. John’s Florida, at Lyle Flagg Field. With him, Callahan will take five things acknowledged from his team’s 17-14, nail-biting win against Gainesville, at home in Seffner.

Hawks Fought Back

  • “This is one game we were behind more than three-quarters of the game and we came back to win. We haven’t been in that situation all year and nobody gave up. That’s a positive thing.”

Play Was Aggressive

  • “We came out of the game healthy, and it was a physical game.”

Coverage Good (Penalties Not So Much)

  • “We did a good job protecting the ball. There were some penalties and we have to work on that.”

Senior Moments

  • “This group is a special group. We’ve never had so many seniors, so many seniors starting. I’d like to get it (the state title) for that reason.”

In Practice This Week

  • “Just doing things better [will be the team’s focus]. We just need to do a little better, to execute a little more.”
