Crime Map Report for Hillsborough’s Greater Brandon ZIP Codes: May 2011 (UPDATED)

EDITOR'S NOTE: This report was last updated June 4, with a second review of incident reports dating back to January 1, 2011. This report has been compiled using the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office's online crime mapping tool. 

Theft and traffic incidents together accounted for 46 percent of the 1,159 offenses reported in May by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office for six ZIP codes in the Greater Brandon area.

Battery and burglary accounted for another 29 percent of the crimes reported, with 183 and 152 incidents, respectively.

In an anlaysis of year-to-date data, the same rankings hold up, with theft and traffic together accounting for 47 percent of the 5,628 crimes reported and batteries and burglary accounting for another 27 percent of the crimes reported.

The numbers were determined using the online “Crime Mapping” feature posted by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, which reports incidents in 15 categories.

For this report, Brandon Patch used the Brandon ZIP codes of 33510 and 33511. Also, ZIP codes for Dover (33527), Seffner (33584), Tampa (33619) and Valrico (33594). 

• Overall, there were 1,159 incidents reported in May, down from 1,186 in April, which in turn had been an increase over the 1,071 in March.

• The top five crime categories in May were theft (288), traffic (242), battery (183), burglary (152) and mischief (90). Drug-related offenses accounted for another 87 incidents.

• Decreases were reported in six categories: fraud (-24), drugs (-11), traffic (-9), mischief (-8), robbery (-6) and DUI (-4).

• There were increases in theft (15), battery (10), assault (4), harassment (3), fire (2) and murder (1).

• Month over month, there were the same number of burglaries (152) and arsons (1).

The online Hillsborough County Crime Map allows for the review of crime data based on date range, ZIP code, place name or address. Victims’ names are not included but noted is the type of crime, location, reference number and date reported.

With the , search results appear as points on a map, or as clusters. A pie graph details the number of occurrences for each crime category. A link to Crime Stoppers, with each incident featured, allows for the anonymous reporting of tips to aid in the investigation of crimes and subsequent arrests.

Also determined in this report:

• ZIP code 33511 had the highest number of reported incidents (375), and especially in the categories of theft (133) and traffic (78). The 33511 ZIP code area encompasses the heaviest concentration of Brandon area shopping, including Regency Square and the Westfield Brandon mall.

• Five ZIP codes showed a decrease in the number of reported incidents. Ranked in order of decreases, from largest to smallest, are ZIP codes 33584 (-13), 33527 (-10),  33594 (-4), 33511 (-3) and 33619 (-2).

•  In May, there were 47 reports of driving under the influence, which accounted for 4 percent of the 1,159 total and was four fewer than the month before. Drugs accounted for 87 incidents, or 7.59 percent of the total, and was 11 fewer than the month before.

Theft and traffic incidents each accounted for 44 percent of the 3,283 offenses reported by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office for the six ZIP codes for the first quarter of 2011.
