Durant's Undefeated Season Kept Alive With 1-Point Win Over Wharton

The Durant High School Cougars played the Wharton Wildcats in New Tampa on Sept. 28. A fourth-quarter touchdown kept alive the Plant City team's push for an undefeated varsity football season.

 

The Durant Cougars, following last week's shutout win against Brandon (36-0), added their fourth win to an undefeated season with a fourth-quarter touchdown on the home turf of the Wharton Wildcats on Sept. 28.

It marks the best season start for the Cougars since going 3-1 in 2004, according to a Tampa Bay Times report. The Cougars going into Friday night's game outscored their opponents 122-7 and boasted a streak of 10 shutout quarters.

In other football action Sept. 28, Armwood blasted back for its win against Jefferson while Brandon suffered its fourth loss of a winless season at its homecoming game at McLane Stadium.

With the win in New Tampa, the Cougars have outscored their opponents 135-19; their straight-quarter streak, snapped at 11. Durant this season shut out Brandon (36-0) and Alonso (29-0) and beat Freedom by 50 points (57-7).

Durant under head coach Mike Gottman is 4-0 overall and 1-0 in league play. Latest rankings place the team 77 in the nation and 64 in the state, according to MaxPreps.com.

Next up for the Cougars are the Plant City Raiders. The game between the cross-town rivals will be played at Durant on Oct. 5. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at 4748 Cougar Path.
