HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL — The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office announced the launch of a new program aimed at promoting gun safety and protecting children and families. As part of this initiative, the sheriff's office is offering gun trigger locks and vaults to Hillsborough County residents at no charge.

Nearly one-third of American households with children under 18 have at least one firearm, and many are not stored safely, said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister. Leaving guns unlocked in the home increases the risk of unintentional shootings, especially when children are present.

“Sadly, we have witnessed the devastating consequences of children accessing unsecured guns,” said Chronister. “This proactive measure will help us ensure that firearms are stored safely and out of the reach of children or anyone else who should not have access to them.”

Trigger locks and vaults will be distributed by deputies while investigating school-based threats to those with guns in their homes. The sheriff's office will also provide them to anyone who requests one.

The sheriff's office said they provide extra security for firearm owners, are easy to use and can be installed on most types of firearms.
