Standoff Ends With Dead Man In Plant City: Sheriff

PLANT CITY, FL — A man who was involved in a standoff with Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies Monday morning in Plant City was found dead inside the house he barricaded himself in for several hours, a sheriff's office news release said.

A man had forced his way inside a home located in the 1900 block of Sparkman Road before 7:55 a.m., according to investigators. A resident inside the home was able to leave the house safely as the man acted erratically. Meanwhile, the man barricaded himself inside and shot multiple times toward deputies, detectives said.

Law enforcement officials did not shoot in return, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said. No officers were injured. Shortly after 10:30 a.m., deputies observed smoke wafting from the house. A few minutes later, a gunshot was heard, investigators said.

Deputies spent several hours trying to make contact with the person but weren't successful. At 2:45 p.m., deputies found the man dead inside the home.

"Our deputies worked tirelessly for hours to try and bring this incident to a peaceful resolution," Sheriff Chad Chronister said. "I want to thank Hillsborough County Fire Rescue and the Plant City Police Department for their assistance during our investigation."

Sparkman Road has been closed in between Jap Tucker Road and Clemons Road in Plant City Monday morning for an investigation, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
