Olympian Diver Chris Colwill Makes Brandon Proud Again

A heralded alumnus of the Brandon Sports & Aquatic Center, Olympian diver Chris Colwill is the lone American to leave the international AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix with a gold medal.

 

"Who's the most well-known athlete to have played at the facility?" That's the question posed on the . The answer: triple Olympic gold medalist Brooke Bennett, silver Olympic medalist Martiza Correia and Olympic diver Christopher Colwill.

It's Colwill, 28, of Athens, Ga., who's making the news this month, as the only American to leave the international AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix with a gold medal, according to the Miami Herald.

Colwill scored a 475.30 to win the men’s 3-meter springboard competition at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center on May 13. His parents, Chuck and Debbie of Brandon, reportedly watched as their son won his first international individual 3-meter gold medal.

Colwill, who is hearing-imparied, has said that his 60-percent hearing loss helps keep him focused in competition.

The Miami Herald report further notes that on May 13, Colwill scored a 79.80 on his fourth dive — a front 4 1/2 tuck, the most difficult dive in his final rotation. After dropping back to fifth place, Colwill pulled out a styling inward 3 1/2 tuck on his final dive to score 91 points to finish in first place.

USA Diving reported on the event as well, and on its Web site posts a look at Colwill's competitions and standings throughout the years.
