Sign-Waving Protestors Out in Force in Bloomingdale
"No Bloomingdale Big Box" is the message neighbors had for passing motorists May 7 on Bloomingdale Avenue in the Greater Brandon area of Valrico.

Residents were out in force May 7 on Bloomingdale Avenue, wavings hands and hand-made signs in protest to big-box retail development and apartments adjacent to the Bloomingale Regional Library.

The group known as Coordinated Active Neighborhoods Development Organization (CANDO) — and loosely known as "No Bloomingdale Big Box" — has been meeting frequently to spearhead community awareness and activism in response to development on land zoned for a 158,800-square-foot big-box store, 260 apartments and other commercial ventures.
The group is active on Facebook and on change.org, with a petition against the development that as of May 7 had realized 840 supporters.

Hillsborough County Commissioners have been invited to a public meeting on the issue, scheduled for May 14 at the The Palms Community Church, just west of Bloomingdale High School, at 1310 East Bloomingdale Avenue.
