Son Loses Vaccinated Dad With Leukemia To COVID-19: Report

An Apollo Beach man cautions people who are immunocompromised and fully vaccinated to continue wearing masks after his dad didn't and died.

APOLLO BEACH, FL — A 61-year-old Apollo Beach man who lived with leukemia died of COVID-19 when he let his guard down once he was fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, WTVT reported.

Daniel Madry was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in May 2020, his son, Mike Madry, told the TV outlet. Afterward Daniel changed his eating habits to healthy and started working out. He also wore masks when he went into stores and practiced social distancing during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

But, Daniel stopped wearing a mask when he would go into stores after he got the vaccine, his son told the news station. Daniel also started hanging out with friends again, and wasn't strict with wearing face coverings or social distancing like he was before the vaccine.

He was hospitalized Aug. 14 and died Aug. 24, according to Mike. His dad didn't know that he was still vulnerable as an immunocompromised person, he said. He wishes someone would have had a talk with his dad encouraging him to still mask up and practice social distancing because he believes he would still be here.
