Watch: ‘Doggy Door Burglars’ Sought By Deputies

A trio of men is accused of using a doggy door to gain access to a Valrico home during a recent burglary.

VALRICO, FL — A trio of men recently broke into a Valrico home using a backyard doggy door to gain entry. While the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office says its deputies have arrested one of the men accused, two suspects have eluded identification so far.

Hoping to remedy that, the sheriff’s office on Thursday released video surveillance footage of the unusual crime in action. The video shows three men outside Valrico home in the 2000 block of Little Road. The men stand around for a while before proceeding to enter the vacant, but not empty home through the doggy door.

“The suspects ransacked the home and took a flat screen television and other property” during the Jan. 22 crime, an email from the sheriff’s office said.

One of the men connected to the crime also appeared in the home’s surveillance footage on Jan. 21, the sheriff's office said. On that evening, deputies say the man was seen entering the home through the doggy door, as well. He returned around 6 p.m. the next night with two unknown accomplices.

Deputies say the man who made two surveillance video appearances has been brought into custody. Joaun Evan Wright, 19, was charged in connection with the case on Feb. 3. He faces burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, criminal mischief, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia charges, according to the sheriff’s office.

The search for the other two suspects continues. They are described as white males in their 20s. Both are slim in build with one estimated to stand about 5-foot-4 and the other 5-foot-2, the sheriff’s office said. Neither is estimated to weigh over 140 pounds.

Anyone who can identify the two men is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS. A reward of up to $3,000 is being offered in the case.
