Windy Conditions Blamed For I-75 Semi Crash

An early Monday morning crash on I-75 near Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard is being blamed on strong winds.

BRANDON, FL — The Florida Highway Patrol ticketed a 34-year-old Riverview man following a Monday morning crash on northbound Interstate 75.

According to the agency, Luis Fernandez Medina, 48, of Brandon was driving a semi north on the interstate around 5:20 a.m. Jan. 23. At that time, Eric Macias was also heading north in a Range Rover.

As the two vehicles approached Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, troopers say a heavy wind gust caused Medina to lose control of the semi. The truck jackknifed into the center median and struck Macias’ SUV. Both vehicles struck a guardrail, a highway patrol report noted.
