Ice Cream Social Raises Over $2,000 For Teacher Battling Cancer
Friends of Nancy Barlar met over ice cream earlier this week with the goal of raising money for her medical expenses.
Ice cream and fun were the names of the game on Tuesday night at Cold Stone Creamery in Carrollwood.
On Dec. 4, the Ice Cream For A Cause event was held to benefit Nancy Barlar, a Tampa educator battling cancer.
"It was an overwhelming success," said Chris Garrido, Nancy's friend who planned the event.

About 500 people attended the event, where 3,000 raffle tickets were purchased, Garrido said. At the end of the night, the event raised $2,665.66 for Barlar's medical expenses.
Barlar is an educator who has taught music at Sulphur Springs Elementary, before becoming band director at Adams Middle School for 11 years. She also worked as an adjunct professor for Florida College and St. Leo University.

Barlar was recently diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer.
"People use the term 'good person' very liberally," Garrido said. "Most people we know are 'good people,' but there are some that rank near the top of that group. That's where Nancy sits."
