Waxing Trend Has Parents Asking 'How Young is Too Young?'

Some companies offer specials for girls under age 15 and some parents are taking children as young as 7 or 8 in for wax jobs.

Before summer camp got under way this year, some pre-teen girls across the country prepared by making an appointment to get their first bikini wax.

Some may have been enticed by a recent deal by Uni K Wax - which has a location in Northdale - offering 50 percent off waxing for girls aged 15 and under during the month of July.

But the premise of a pre-teen girl getting waxed at such a young age has sparked controversy from some and support from others in recent stories printed in The New York Times and The Huffington Post.

"The New York Times recently spoke to make-up expert Bobbi Brown who defended the uptick in mothers requesting hair removal services for their daughters," the Post reported. "It's about making sure your child is comfortable. If she's going to be a bunk with all these girls, and she feels insecure because she hasn't taken care of the hair on her lip or her legs, you know what? You do whatever you can to make her feel good when she gets there."

Ailin Cruz, a receptionist at Uni K Wax in Northdale, said she hasn't seen young girls come into their location at 15720 N. Dale Mabry Highway for bikini waxes. She said prices for a bikini wax range from $19 to $29, and that girls below 18 need parental consent to get waxed.

Girls under the age of 15 must have their parents present with them to perform waxing services, she said.

"The young girls come in for their armpits for summer camp or the beach," she said. "They do mustaches or eyebrows. That's usually what we get young girls coming in for. I've never seen a girl below age 16 get her bikini (area) done."
