Clearwater Aquarium To Reopen Following Hurricanes Milton, Helene
The aquarium, which sustained damage during the storms, is slated to reopen Oct. 18 with the debut of the Aqua Lanterns Festival of Lights.
CLEARWATER, FL — The Clearwater Marine Aquarium is slated to reopen this weekend, three weeks after the facility sustained significant damage during Hurricane Helene and lost power when Milton made landfall in Sarasota County.
While the aquarium won't reopen to the public until Monday, the facility will debut its Aqua Lanterns: A Chinese Festival of Lights celebration on Friday night from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
"As the sun sets, the aquarium transforms into a glowing seascape, featuring stunning illuminated sculptures up to 13 feet tall of whales, turtles, dolphins, sharks as well as penguins, jellyfish and other sparkling sea creatures," according to the event's description. "Guests can stroll through this mesmerizing marine world and discover over 30 beautifully crafted lantern displays next to the amazing real animals throughout the aquarium."

The aquarium sustained severe damage when Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida's Big Bend region on Sept. 26. Despite avoiding a direct hit, Helene lashed the Tampa Bay region with dangerous storm surge and devastating winds.

The storm killed 12 people in Pinellas County and hundreds of others across multiple states.
According to the aquarium's website, storm surge inundated the facility after Helene strengthened to a Category 4 storm, damaging equipment and other essential tools needed to support marine life.
"All other resident animals are safe, and some animals have been moved within the facility to ensure they are secure while we address impacts to their habitats," aquarium staff wrote in an update following Helene.
When Milton made landfall as a Category 3 storm two weeks later, the aquarium lost power and sustained minor damage to fencing at its Manatee Rehabilitation Center, some exterior lights and a few solar panels, staff said.
With the help of donors, the aquarium raised $150,000 in funds to help with recovery efforts.
