CLEARWATER, FL — The Clearwater Solid Waste/Recycling Department has discontinued its electronic waste collection days and will no longer host them because electronics without rechargeable batteries can now be disposed of in the trash.

Household electronics that are affected include televisions, computer monitors, computer processing units or towers, laptops, tablets, cell phones and items with rechargeable batteries that cannot be removed.

If your electronic has rechargeable batteries, remove the rechargeable battery, or bring the entire item to a Pinellas County household chemical collection event.

As of October, Pinellas County and the city of Clearwater no longer send electronics to a private electronics recycler. Instead, they go to the waste-to-energy plant, where metals are recovered and recycled and plastic casings are burned to create energy.
