Fatal Clearwater Plane Crash Under Investigation

Clearwater Police say a man was killed in a Saturday evening plane crash.

CLEARWATER, FL — A fatal Friday evening plane crash at Clearwater Airpark is under investigation by local and federal agencies.

According to the Clearwater Police Department, the crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. May 5 at the 1000 N. Hercules Ave. municipal airport. The male pilot was the only person on the plane at the time of the crash, which happened as the plane was landing.

The single-engine Cirrus was registered out of state, but police have not said where. The pilot had not yet been identified Friday evening.

“Early indications are that the plane was trying to land when it flipped and crashed and came to rest upside down,” police wrote in an email to media.

The FAA and NTSB are expected to assume control of the investigation.

Police are asking anyone who heard or saw something unusual before the crash to call them at 727-562-4242.
