Moffitt To Host Free Skin Cancer Screenings On Clearwater Beach

Moffitt Cancer Center's Mole Patrol will be out in force this weekend.

CLEARWATER, FL – While people out at Clearwater Beach this weekend may be looking for fun in the sun, the Mole Patrol will be out to help people enjoy the sun safely.

Created by Moffitt Cancer Center more than 20 years ago, the Mole Patrol will offer free cancer screenings on Saturday, July 29 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Pier 60 Pavilion on Clearwater Beach.

The Mole Patrol is a free mobile skin cancer screening program made up of physicians and other medical professionals who all specialize in skin cancer and/or dermatology. Since 1996, the Mole Patrol has screened more than 15,000 people and recommended thousands of those tested to receive follow-up care.

According to the Moffitt Cancer Center, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer, making it the most common form of cancer in the country. This year alone, more than 5.5 million people will be diagnosed with the disease, the organization said.

However, Moffitt experts say early detection can save lives. The Mole Patrol recommends people to check their entire body for new bumps, moles and patches that are flaky and red, or sores that aren’t healing. Also, the patrol recommends to look for moles that have changed in shape, size, texture or color.
