Each Year, Valspar Championship Sponsors Mural As Way To Brighten To Tampa Bay

A seahorse, sailboats and the Sunshine Skyway Bridge are featured in Ashley Cantero's colorful murals at PIE, sponsored by Valspar.

CLEARWATER, FL —In its continuing effort to beautify the community, Valspar, the paint manufacturer and sponsor of the PGA's Tour's Valspar Championship at Innisbrook Golf and Spa Resort in Palm Harbor, unveiled its latest colorful contribution.

Each year, Valspar sponsors a local artist tasked with transforming vacant walls with bright murals.

This year, artist Ashley Cantero created retro beach-inspired murals in the arrivals hall and baggage claim at St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, 14700 Terminal Blvd., greeting passengers as they pass through the arrivals area.

“I am thrilled to share the beauty of our community through color and creativity in the Be Bright mural,” said Cantero. “When visitors arrive, I hope the kaleidoscope of color and geometric shapes inspire wonder and generate excitement as they begin their journey.”

Cantero is a Tampa native who is best known for her precise line work and bold, emotionally expressive female characters with themes inspired by '60s psychedelia, Atomic Age design and science fiction.

“The St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport is honored to showcase local talent, like Ashley’s, and supports Valspar and the Be Bright initiative," said Michele Routh, public relations director at St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport. “This mural will uplift visitors for years to come.”

Cantero’s mural joins four other Be Bright murals located at the North Greenwood Recreation Center in Clearwater, Tampa General Hospital, Nashville, Tennessee, and Ruston, Louisiana.

The Be Bright mural initiative allows Valspar to use its paints to inspire hope and joy through colorful images of the community.

“Seeing local artists use our paint to spread joy and put smiles on peoples’ faces through these beautiful murals is a small way we can impact the communities where we are,” said Sara Hackney, senior marketing manager of the Consumer Brands Group for the Sherwin-Williams Co.

Pro golfer Taylor Moore, winner of the Valspar Championship held March 16 to 19 at Innisbrook's Copperhead Course, will have the honor of choosing the location for the 2024 mural.

The mural is one of three that now adorns St. Pete–Clearwater International Airport.

Last fall, PIE teamed up with Creative Pinellas to choose two artists chosen to transform the blank walls at PIE Gate 12 into vibrant murals.

In addition to the three new murals, PIE is home to a large collection of art by renowned Florida artists including a 45-foot blown and painted class artwork at the airport's main entrance.
